Winemaker's diary
10 February 2010 Since winter does not seem to be retiring yet, we re-designed our website to a more winter-like attire:-) We believe it befits it well
... and we continue updating our gallery of winter pictures from Pálava
Do you fear that you won't be able to get to your nearest wineshop becase of the snow? Yet, you fee like swallowing some Ilias?:-) You can try Best of Ilias as selected by Vínoklub, and they will deliver it to your doorstep! Or you can create your own box of Ilias' wines and have it deliver throu our e-shop!:-)
We plan:
On 27 March 2010 we will take part in a selling exhibition at the second year of wine festival in Tábor. The festival starts on 12 March and you can check out its programme at the event's official website.
In March 2010, we will be tasting 2008 wines in the recenly opened Víno Deja vu wine bar at Maltézské náměstí No. 8 in Prague.
In April 2010 we will be celebrating the opening of the new season in ArtCafé in Český Krumlov.
Another year of the traditional and more and more popular Summer of open cellars will take place between June and September 2010
It happened:
Do you want to know what do winemakers do in winter? When we are not tasting wines (either in our cellar or at some competitor's :-)) or barrelling, adding sulphur or other necessary substances, we can enjoy this year's beautiful winter in Palava..
On 19 January 2010, we tasted 2008 wines with the Vínoklub wine club at the Monarch wine bar in Prague, at Na Perstyne. Both the audience and us enjoy the evening thoroughly, including raclette at the very end.
31 December 2009:
PF 2010
It's all over... Friends have left, the cellar has been cleaned (again) and the Day of Open cellar with the highest number of visitors in history is slowly drawing to its close.
Last Saturday, on 28 November 2009, another Day of open cellars in Pavlov took place. 10 Pavlov winemakers (vinařství Abrlových, vinařství ing. Jan Garčic, vinařství Ilias, vinařství ing. Pavel Krška, vinařství ing. Mikulský, vinařství Jiří Šilinek, Réva Rakvice - sklep Pavlov, vinařství Vilém Topolanský, Vinařství Pavlov and vinařství Antonín Zatloukal) opened their cellars to visitors.
And the preparations go on today, 26 November:. We have cleaned down cobwebs, turned out spiders and mice.. but most of all, we bottled the remaining barrels of Modrý Portugal! In other words, we are now well prepared for your invasion on Saturday :-)
25 November: We made significant progress in our preparations for this Saturday of Open cellars as well as for pre-Christmas shopping fever: we bottled remaining Merlot! We now have on our store over one thousand bottles of Merlot again....
For now, our Czech Grand Tour ended in Benátky nad Jizerou, in the U vinice wine bar in the Husovo náměstí square. The wine tasting took place on Friday 20 November 2009, starting again at 7 pm. Again, we enjoyed it very much and hope to see you some time in the future, this time maybe directly in our cellar in Moravia.
On Friday, 14 November Saint Martin's goose was served along with Saint Martin's and 2009 wines in the Pavlov hotel. We could not miss this event and did not regret it. Both wine and goose were delicious!
Our second stop was last Friday 13 November 2009 in Mladá Boleslav, or more exactly in nearby Kosmonosy. We were opening 2008 wines for you in the "Divadýlko" wine bar. The Saint Martina wine tasting was very pleasant, we enjoyed it very much, and we hope you did as well! We are looking forward to seeing you at the same place in a year's time!
5 November: We succeeded! We have bottled ice wine Ryzlink vlašský 2008! Wine of beautiful bouquet and harmonic taste, only in 'limited edition' 200 bottles...
We started the autumn Czech Grand Tour. Our first stop was on Tuesday 3 November 2009 at the Vinotéka U sv. Vincenta wine bar (Liborova 13, Břevnov) in Prague. The presentation was very pleasant, we even tasted some of our 2006 and 2005 wines.
29 October: As of today, you can also find us on Facebook:-)
24 October: This year's wine picking is over. Fatigue mingles with relief and satisfaction over hard work done. Though there is still a great deal of work ahead of us in the cellar, we are one step closer to beautiful 2009 wines.
22 October: Finally! We have got first red stum! And it's yummy... :-)
21 October: We gathered strength for the finish! Today, we are picking Tramín červený (Gewurztraminer) and Pinot noir at the same time. We are approaching the home straight of this year's harvest very fast.
19 October: Everything in the cellar is bubling and fermenting, it all seems to be going in the right direction. And we gather strenght and warmth for tomorrow's picking.
While labouring at the vineyards and in the cellar during the harvest, we were very pleased and cheered up by a kind profile of our winery by Klára Kollárová and Ondřej Kopička from Vinograf (see Mr. Ilias' viticultural Odyssea). If you like the profile and feel like tasting our wines, you can pop in the Vinograf wine shop in Verónský dům in Míšeňská street in Prague. and taste our wines in the company of Klára Kollárová or other leading sommeliers and tasters.
14 October: It seems that autumn is over before it actually started :) But everything has to picked so we managed to pick Modrý Portugal today. It will be a delicious selection of grapes...
12 October: It's official now: the summer is over and we all we have is rainy and muddy autumn. We still hope that weather gets better so that we could finish wine picking.
10 October: It seems that summer is gone now. But the wine picking does not stop. So we pray that it does not rain too much and bravely continue wading through muddy vineyards...
9 October: Ryzlink vlašský has been picked and together with the rest of white varieties it is bubbling and yeasting in the cellar:-)
Tomorrow early morning we set out to tackle Veltlín...
6 October: So we managed to picked Ryzlink vlašský (Welschriesling). Or at least its majority. Again, its sweet late harvest:-) This year has really turned out well...
3 October: Back on earth :-) Despite (or maybe thanks to?) yesterday's wine and food feast, we set out full of energy to face further containers with grapes. Today, greatly reinforced by the Prague ring, we are going to crack down Pinot gris...
2 October: It's all over. Big food and wine feast in winemakers' heaven, Vinum Coeli hotel in Dolní Kounice. A very enjoyable event presented by Branko Černý. And what exactly did we and other great Moravian winemakers enjoy? Have a look at the evening's menu.
1 October: Chardonnay has followed Pint blanc into the cellar.. Energy is slowly evaporating, but ethusiasm persists:-)
30 September: Pint blanc is slowly settling down in the cellar.. and we are gathering strength for tomorrow's picking of Chardonnay. Fingers crossed that weather remains as favourable as it has been so far..
29 September: Today, with energy and enthusiasm typical for the beginning of the harvest and in an unrecorded time, we picked first grapes - Pinot Blanc. Lovely sweet late harvest. Let's keep it up!
28 September: The cellar is empty, tanks and other containers have been washed and are awaiting their future content. Starting tomorrow, we are taking this year's harvest by storm and we start the annual marathon of hand-picking, destemming, crushing, transfering between containers and skimming off :-) In brief, the harvest is here... We are confident that this year's harvest will beat those of prior years.
We visited winemakers' heaven again:-) ... Those who stopped by in the Vinum Coeli hotel in Dolní Kounice during the week from 21 to 27 August 2009 could be served dishes together our wines, or even a special menu designed to complement our wines. The whole week started on Friday 21th at 8.30 pm by a winetasting moderated by Branko Černý.
